Well, I’ll be damned…

After spending all morning playing in my closet, I have to concede. The Veristyle app was right…(1)

Ya girl definitely has a Gamine face and body with some strong Classic essence.

I’ll stop trying to explain the logic of this system, because I clearly can’t speak with any level of expertise. But I see why people prefer working with Kitchener’s Style Essences more than Kibbe’s Body Types.

Essence is far less quantifiable than your Kibbe ID… And, you may be thinking, oh no- Kibbe was already such a journey. But, have no fear, essence is more intuitive so it’s actually less of a process.

It is also important to point out that, unlike kibbe, your essence does not have to conform to those exact physical characteristics.

Gabrielle Arruda, “The 7 Style Essences Explained.”

Show, don’t tell, as all the great writers say. Here are a few photos of me playing with Classic pieces in broken vertical lines. (I rock a version of this outfit below and it works really well.)

To know me is to know I hate being wrong. I’d sooner cut my tongue out of my mouth than admit to misspeaking. In this case…I’m good with it.

I never related to the Soft Dramatic archetype. I’m a “Less is more” kind of girl who feels sexiest in clean, sharp looks. Yes, I have long limbs and some curves, but I’m more at home in this slightly boyish, playful take on Classic style in my day-to-day looks.(2)

It’s worth keeping in mind that these style systems were created by consultants selling services. They aren’t foolproof because the “secret sauce” is in the eye of the seller. At best, if you’re taking the DIY approach, they’re a springboard to honing your eye for what looks good on you. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it:

In the end, NO ONE CAN TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE. You decide how you want to show up and make it work for you.

So. Bring on the simple, elegant sass. My body is quite literally ready.

See the joys of getting closer to one’s personal style?

(1) The folks on Kibbe Reddit confirmed the Veristyle app is pretty unreliable. Sorry, guys. You’ll have to go on the long journey to typing yourself. I deleted the post referring to it. No need to publicize faulty tech.

(2) I can still pull off some Soft Dramatic dress recommendations. This is a “semi casual” SD rec that would work as a special occasion piece for me.

I used to be "skinny black girl." I'm now a slender woman on the other side of 35 with no new moniker who is not quite interested in writing under her given name. Still writing my life, a day (or some months) at a time. Also, still black.
